STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO PLAN AHEAD

COLLEGE PLANNING TIME LINE

GRADE 9

Meet with your counselor to begin discussing colleges and careers and to update your academic planning.

Ø       Make sure you are enrolled in college-preparatory or tech-prep courses.

Ø       Work to your academic potential.  (The grades you earn in ninth grade will be included in your final high school GPA and class rank.)  This is important for college admission and scholarships.

Ø       Explore your interests and possible careers.  Take advantage of career day opportunities.

Ø       Participate in extracurricular activities (school and non-school sponsored).

Ø       Talk to your parents about planning for college expenses.  Continue or begin a saving plan for college.

Ø       Look at college information available in your Career Center.  Use the Internet to check out college Web sites.  Make preliminary list of colleges that might interest you.

Ø       Plan to participate in the freshman field trip to Oregon State University and Western Oregon University.

Ø       Tour a nearby college if possible.  Visit relatives or friends who live on or near a college campus.  Check out dorms.  Go to the library or student center.  Get a feel for college life.  Investigate summer enrichment programs.

Ø       Continue to update your academic planning program with your counselor.  Students should also continue exploring possible career opportunities, participate in extracurricular activities (school and non school sponsored), and remember to continue a saving plan for college.
